Heritage Oaks Park Project Is Beginning!

Austin Parks FoundationSRCC Logo

Austin Parks Foundation (APF) awarded a matching grant to South River City Citizens that will enable us to create a pocket park that can be enjoyed by all residents. The planning for this project has been in progress since 2014. SRCC residents approved the landscape design, City of Austin PARD approved the technical requirements and guided the plans through the permit review process. The contractor is TF Harper. As resident stewards of the park, here are basic facts you should know:

What is being installed?  A loop trail, 2 picnic tables, 2 trash receptacles, and 4 benches.

Why is the loop material concrete rather than crushed granite? PARD does not install granite trails on areas with a slope over 3% which is the majority of this trail. A granite material would not be sustainable in this park.

How will the heritage trees be protected?  The tree trunks have been surrounded with protection. The canopy areas are fenced off and construction will avoid the critical root zones.

Can the grass / ground cover survive the exposure to heavy equipment? Although re-vegetation is not part of the TF Harper contract, we hope PARD and APF might work with us to come up with a plan to restore any ground cover that is disturbed.

ACL Festival Info and Road Closures

AustinCityLimitsMusicFestival-credit-Ashley-Garmon

It is ACL festival time and SRCC wants you to be ready for the typical road closures and traffic that come from the festivities in and around Zilker Park! While no changes will occur within our neighborhood boundaries, traffic spillover and egress for major routes will cause some weekend delays. If you are new to the neighborhood, it will be very helpful to review the traffic plan below.

ACL Weekend 1: October 2-4

ACL Weekend 2: October 9-11

Little Stacy Park Update: Pruning and Tree Health

little stacy pruning

The City of Austin’s Urban Forestry Program has notified SRCC of pruning and tree maintenance efforts at Little Stacy Park that should commence in the coming weeks. This project is focused on pruning dead wood from the live oaks over the wading pool for health and safety reasons. Crews will take care with tool and wound sanitization to prevent oak wilt infection. Additional pruning for clearance will be considered for a future project.

Please reach out to the SRCC leadership team or the Urban Forestry Program with any questions on this project or other tree-related concerns.

Complete Streets for Riverside Drive

Riverside Drive

At the September SRCC General Membership Meeting, Miller Nuttle and Matthew Cramer from BikeAustin presented the organization’s vision for Riverside as a Complete Street. The vision calls for protected bike lanes, better pedestrian facilities, traffic calming measures and improved bus transportation along the Riverside corridor. Specific plans have not been developed, but the organization welcomes anyone interested to participate in their efforts.

BikeAustin is seeking general support from SRCC for a Complete Street plan on Riverside and has asked that we endorse the following letter: Riverside Coalition letter. A vote will be taken on this issue at the October SRCC General Membership Meeting.

Additionally, for anyone who is interested in individually supporting BikeAustin’s efforts, below is a link to the Riverside Petition as well as more information on how to get directly involved. BikeAustin has recently crossed the 500 signature milestone of supporters for Riverside as a Complete Street for all users and abilities.
